From what once was a unified Lakota High School came both Lakota East High School and Lakota West. The two physically identical schools were built in 1997 when severe over-crowding forced the district to expand. The two high schools have an interdistrict rivalry which shows off each year at the EastWest football game. This game usually draws record crowds, is usually televised, and held at Lakota East High School every other year. In 2009, the Lakota Freshman building split to East and West and a brand new building was made for the Lakota East Freshman Building. Lakota West Freshman Building is now the previous Lakota Freshman Building.
